Werkstatt Bayern
People · Works · Stories
(untranslated proper name — workshop tradition in Bavaria)
Topic area launches July 2026
Werkstatt Bayern · People · Works · Stories
is a digital stage for music, art, theatre and craftsmanship in one digital space.
Location-based, artistically curated, lastingly visible.
A living digital space for Bavaria’s culture
For the first time, music, theatre, fine arts and craftsmanship in Bavaria are presented in a shared digital platform — connected, artistically curated, location-based and lastingly accessible.
Werkstatt Bayern is not an archive. It makes the work of contemporary artists and cultural actors visible at the place of their activity and within Bavaria’s digital atlas — and at the same time presents historical figures who have shaped Bavaria’s cultural life. It is about the stories of all: voices from the past and the present.
What does this topic area offer?
- Over 500 places across all seven Bavarian administrative regions: theatres, workshops, studios, rehearsal spaces and venues
- Cross-disciplinary: independent theatre, craftsmanship and workshops, popular culture and music, children’s and youth theatre, fine arts
- Curated content: miniatures, workshop and stage portraits, interviews, location-based stories

A central platform for Bavarian arts
Bavaria has an exceptionally rich cultural landscape. Yet many actors — especially from the independent scene — remain locally bound in their work. With Werkstatt Bayern, a central, location-based digital platform is being created that makes their work visible beyond regional boundaries.
No comparable platform exists in any other German federal state. The BayernHistoryApp as technical foundation is secured until 2036 — the content remains permanently accessible and is continuously expanded.
Background — expertise of the project organisation
The idea for Werkstatt Bayern emerged from many years of work within the Bavarian Association of Independent Performing Arts (Verband Freie Darstellende Künste Bayern). Wolfgang Hauck was its 1st Chair from 2007 to 2019 and produced over 250 expert opinions on theatre funding for the Bavarian Ministry of Science and Arts during this time. The need for a shared digital platform for the independent arts scene became visible in this work every day.
