Foreword

Jewish life in Bavaria has been part of our history for centuries. It has shaped cities, villages and landscapes, leaving traces in culture, religion and everyday life. At the same time, it was almost extinguished by exclusion, expulsion and the unprecedented breakdown of civilisation in the Shoah. That Jewish life is once again visible and diverse in Bavaria today is both a gift and a responsibility. The new topic area „Jewish Life in Past and Present" in the BayernHistoryApp makes this dimension visible. It shows how much Jewish life enriches our present – and that we shape our shared future from this common heritage. The app offers a contemporary approach: location-based, accessible and at the same time substantively grounded. It invites users to explore places, understand connections and rediscover Jewish life in Bavaria. I am pleased to academically support this important topic area and to contribute to a deeper understanding of our shared cultural space.

We are gathering what is scattered – and naturally integrate Jewish life into Bavarian history. Not only history, but also the present is to find space here. The doors of this digital space are open.
