Inns and Breweries – cover image of the topic area

Topic area

Bavaria's inns and breweries – places of encounter, culture and history. We portray historic taverns and breweries in the BayernHistoryApp.

Topic area in development, launch summer 2026

What is it about?

For centuries, inns and breweries have been central meeting places in Bavaria — for sociability, festivities and feasts, but also for politics and literature. Travellers and locals, craftspeople and notables, friends and chance acquaintances meet here.

In this topic area of the BayernHistoryApp, we portray taverns, breweries and brewery inns through researched texts, photographs, audio features and interviews. We preserve this rich culture, remember it and keep it alive in the present.

What you will find in the app

  • Portraits of historic taverns, from medieval inns to baroque showpieces
  • Stories about the development of Bavarian brewing, from monastery cellars to industrialisation
  • Background on the Bavarian Purity Law and its significance
  • Traces of the tavern in Bavarian literature and politics
  • Audio features, interviews with innkeepers, brewery visits
  • Location-based: content appears at the actual place

On a journey through Bavaria

This topic area launches in summer 2026 and is conceived as an in-house project by dieKunstBauStelle. First entries are already available from communities where inns play a special role.

We are looking for partners across all seven Bavarian administrative regions. The topic area is open-ended and will keep growing.
